Teaching English to Young Learners.

Overview

This course is designed for native and non-native speakers who already have some teaching experience and is very practical in nature. It consists of ten one-and-a-half hour modules covering a wide variety of teaching techniques and strategies for teaching young learners.

An emphasis is placed on teaching in South-East Asia using the communicative approach to language teaching.

Candidates should be at least 20 years of age, have a good standard of English, and are required to attend all classes. The course is run Monday to Friday between the hours of 09:00 - 12:30 over one week. Syllabus

module 1 - Children's Needs Trainees study the special needs of young learners and the implications of these for the teacher.

module 2 - Listening Skills Trainees participate in a range of listening activities designed for young learners. Afterwards, they analyse the rationale behind them and what makes them effective and consider variations on them.

module 3 - Classroom Management Trainees study the aims of effective classroom management and consider the particular classroom management problems presented by young learners and possible solutions for them.

module 4 - Speaking Trainees participate in a range of speaking activities designed for young learners. Afterwards, they analyse what makes them effective and consider variations on them.


module 5 - Vocabulary Trainees study effective ways of both introducing and revising vocabulary with young learners.


module 6 - Approaches to Reading Trainees consider how young learners learn to read and study ways of structuring lessons effectively to help young learners develop their reading skills.

module 7 - Storytelling Trainees consider the use of stories in the young learner classroom. Trainees are given a chance to bring a story 'to life'.

module 8 - Writing Trainees study what is involved in learning to write and what makes it particularly difficult for young learners. They participate in a range of activities designed for developing young learners' writing skills and consider what makes them effective.

module 9 - Project Work Trainees look at ways to incorporate projects into the young learner classroom environment.

module 10 - Games and Songs Trainees share games and songs which they themselves have found effective in teaching young learners.
