Cambridge Certificate in English Language Teaching to Adults (CELTA)

Celta Overview

The Cambridge Certificate in English Language Teaching to Adults CELTA (formerly the CTEFLA) is run in over 120 centres world-wide and is widely regarded as one of the most important forms of training in TEFL. It is recognised internationally. What follows is key information regarding the course and the course structure.

The CELTA is an introductory course for candidates who have little or no previous English language teaching experience. It may also be suitable for candidates with some experience but little previous training.

During the course, candidates develop familiarity with the principles of effective teaching and acquire a range of practical skills for teaching English to adult learners. The course includes teaching practice, observation of experienced teachers in the classroom and completion of a range of practically focussed written assignments.

Celta Entry Requirements

Applicants must:

  • be a least 18. It is generally recommended that candidates should be aged 20 or over, but candidates aged between 18 –20 can be accepted at the centre’s discretion

  • have an awareness of language and a competence in English, both written and spoken, that enables you to undertake the course and prepare for teaching a range of levels

  • have the potential to develop the necessary skills to become effective teachers and to successfully complete the written assignments and the practice teaching.
  •

Candidates should normally have, as a minimum entry requirement, a standard of education equivalent to that required for entry into higher education. We may at our discretion, accept applicants who do not have formal qualifications at this level if screening indicates that you would be likely to complete the course successfully.

Centres also have to satisfy themselves that the course is suitable for all applicants in terms of their experience, background, and their career plans.

In addition all applicants must complete a pre-interview task and attend an interview, either face to face or, if overseas at the time of application, by phone. The admission procedure is designed to safeguard applicants' interests. The application challenges you and shows you the areas you'll be involved in during the course, and also helps the centre to accept only those that we think can successfully complete the course. If you wish to apply for a course, download the application pack, print the application form and send it by post or email with the pre-interview task to our training department.

    Celta Course Content

The course is very intensive and concentrates on the practical rather than the theoretical with a significant amount of teaching practice. The course is divided into 4 main areas:

  • Methodology Input i.e. techniques and strategies for teaching

  • Language Awareness i.e. grammar, lexis and phonology

  • Supervised and observed Teaching Practice, teaching English to two groups of different level learners. Guidelines for further professional development after the course.

Trainees will be expected to spend several hours per evening on lesson preparation, homework, research, reading and longer written assignments. Observation of experienced teachers is also included in the programme.

  • This is a very intensive full-time programme over 4 weeks. Class size is kept to a maximum of 6 trainees per tutor. Each course is assessed by a representative of the University of Cambridge Local Examinations Syndicate.

    Celta Application

To apply for the CELTA you need to complete the application form and related task. The task includes an essay. The application challenges you and shows you the areas you'll be involved in, during the course, and also helps the centre to accept only those that we think can successfully complete the course. If you wish to apply for a course, print the application form (contained in the application pack available for download) and send it by post or email with the pre-interview task to our training department.
